Six Must-Try Calgary Experiences for Newcomers

Welcome to Calgary! We are so excited that you're here and (hopefully!) loving your new home. Whether you've moved from another large urban centre or Calgary is your first experience with city living, we know you'll find it charming, easy to navigate and fun! Here are six spots that we loved visiting when we were new to the region, and we think you'll love them too!
(Note: approximate ticket/admission prices and transit options are current as of the writing of this blog; be sure to check each attraction's website for updated info!)

1. See the Whole City (and Beyond!) from the Calgary Tower & Then Stroll Downtown Calgary

Why go: Kick off your Calgary journey with sweeping views of the city and Rockies from the tower’s observation deck and glass floor. Once you've been up the tower, you can stroll in any direction to get to know the heart of downtown Calgary, grab some food and drink, and get a feel for your charming yet trendy new home!
Cost:
About $25 per adult; about $70 for a family of four (2 adults, 2 kids)
Getting there:
Transit: Steps from Centre Street CTrain Station
Driving: Paid downtown parking nearby
Biking/Walking: Downtown bike racks; walkable from central hotels

2. Spend the Day Surrounded by Science at the TELUS Spark Science Centre

Why go: A hands-on museum blending art, science, and play—perfect for inspiring minds of any age. BONUS: The Calgary Zoo is right next door!!!!!
Cost:
Adults are about $33, Kids are about $24 and a Family of 6 can enter for about $115
Getting there:
Transit: Bus or CTrain to Bridgeland + short walk
Driving: On-site paid parking available
Cycling: Accessible via local bike lanes
3. Learn About Calgary's History and Have Fun at Heritage Park Historical Village

Why go: Stroll through western heritage buildings, ride a steam train, and experience pioneer life in a living museum, ride some fun midway-style rides, grab an ice cream cone from a pioneer village-style shop, watch seasonal entertainment and get to know Calgary as it was!
Cost:
Babies are free, adults are about $40, and kids are about $30. Low-income Calgarians may qualify for reduced prices. Annual Memberships also cut costs!
Getting there:
Driving: Paid on-site parking, free parking for Annual Members
Transit: Bus from Heritage CTrain Station
Biking: Scenic path from Glenmore Reservoir
4. Encounter Wildlife at the Calgary Zoo

Why go: Meet fascinating creatures, from penguins to lemurs, in engaging, conservation‑focused exhibits. BONUS: The Zoo is right next door to TELUS Spark Science Centre!
Cost:
Prices vary by day and by season, but adults are about $35-$40 and kids are about $30-$35 (definitely check the Zoo's website for prices on the day you hope to visit).
Getting there:
Transit: CTrain to Zoo Station—right at the entrance
Driving: Paid parking available on-site
Cycling: Bow River pathways bring you right to the zoo
5. Enjoy All-Ages Thrills at Calaway Park


Why go: Calaway is a very well-run amusement park. It happens to also be Western Canada’s biggest amusement park. Featuring tons of rides suitable for kids and adults (with options for thrill-seekers and those who like to play it safer), live entertainment throughout the park, great food options, friendly staff, —nonstop family fun.
Cost:
Affordable season's passes available each year plus varying admission prices depending on whether you book online or at the gate. Lower prices on inclement weather days & if you visit the park later in the afternoon. Visit their website to learn more.
Getting there:
Driving: 10–15 min west via Trans‑Canada Hwy; FREE parking
Transit: No direct service
Cycling: Not ideal—highway location
6. Be One With Nature and Find All-Weather Fun at Prince’s Island Park
Why go: Situated beside the Bow River and in the upscale downtown Eau Claire

neighbourhood, this park is worth a visit all year long. In the winter, you can skate, and in the summer come enjoy regular festivals and live performance events. There are tons of walking and biking paths, picnic spots, and it's super close to the iconic Peace Bridge, which takes you across the river to more trendy shopping in Kensington. Located right inside the park is the River Cafe, which is open most of the year for upscale dining with gorgeous views.
Cost: Free (but most of the festivals and live events require paid tickets)
Getting there:
Transit: 5‑10 min from downtown CTrain stations
Driving: Paid lots nearby (Eau Claire); limited street parking (but if you're patient you can find a spot!)
Cycling: Excellent bike‑path access via Bow River trail
